Stone Carpet for a Terrace and Balcony — What Materials Should You Choose?
A stone carpet is a decorative flooring system made of natural or coloured aggregate and polyurethane resin. On terraces and balconies, it creates an aesthetic mineral surface with a natural look.
For outdoor applications, proper substrate preparation is very important. A stone carpet should not be treated as a standalone waterproofing layer. On a terrace or balcony, there should be a sealed protective layer under the system to protect the substrate against water.
When is a stone carpet a good choice?
A stone carpet works well where you want a decorative finish and the natural appearance of aggregate. The system can be used on terraces, balconies, outdoor stairs and other properly prepared mineral substrates.
It is worth considering if you want a surface that looks different from a standard roller-applied resin coating or tiles. A stone carpet works well with façades, gardens and entrance areas.
What does a stone carpet system consist of?
A typical stone carpet system consists of several elements:
- - properly prepared substrate,
- - primer layer,
- - membrane or protective layer for the substrate,
- - natural or coloured aggregate,
- - polyurethane resin for binding the aggregate.
The aggregate is mixed with resin in the correct proportion and then spread over the prepared surface. For a proper result, it is important to mix the material evenly and spread the mass carefully.
Why is the membrane important?
On balconies and terraces, the surface is exposed to rain, snow, frost and temperature changes. That is why a protective layer should be placed under the stone carpet to protect the substrate against water.
The stone carpet itself is a decorative and functional layer, but it should not replace proper waterproofing. If the substrate has cracks, leaks or moisture problems, these should be resolved before the system is applied.
Natural or coloured aggregate?
Natural or coloured aggregate can be used for a stone carpet. Natural aggregate gives a more classic mineral appearance. Coloured aggregate makes it possible to achieve a more consistent colour and match the surface to a specific design.
For outdoor use, materials resistant to UV radiation and changing weather conditions should be used. Choosing the right resin for binding the aggregate is especially important.
What tools will be needed?
To apply a stone carpet, you may need:
- - mixing container,
- - low-speed mixer,
- - steel trowel for spreading the mass,
- - tools for preparing and cleaning the substrate,
- - gloves and basic protective accessories.
Resin rollers may be needed for priming or preparing the substrate layers, but the stone carpet itself is spread with a trowel.
Substrate preparation
The substrate should be stable, dry, clean and properly prepared. It should not be greasy, dusty or loose. Weak concrete areas, cracks and uneven spots should be repaired before starting work.
On terraces and balconies, it is especially important to check slopes, water drainage and the condition of the existing waterproofing. Water should not remain under the system or in areas where the floor meets flashings, walls or thresholds.
Calculate materials in the calculator
You do not need to select all layers and packages manually. In the calculator, you choose the type of system, area and substrate condition, and the calculator selects the products and full packages.
