Resin Floor for a Garage — What Materials Should You Choose?

A resin floor in a garage helps protect concrete against dusting, dirt and moisture. A well-selected system makes the surface easier to keep clean and improves its resistance to everyday use.

In garages, epoxy and polyurethane systems are most commonly used. The right choice depends on the expected finish, substrate condition, way of use and whether the floor should be smooth, anti-slip or more decorative.

 

 

The simplest system: roller-applied epoxy resin

The simplest solution for a garage is a roller-applied epoxy system. It usually consists of a primer layer and two layers of pigmented epoxy resin.

It is a good choice if you want to protect concrete, reduce dusting and obtain an aesthetic, easy-to-clean surface. A roller-applied system is easier to apply than a self-levelling floor and works well in many standard garages.

This type of system usually requires:

  • - primer resin,
  • - epoxy resin for concrete painting,
  • - resin rollers,
  • - a 10 cm roller for edges and details,
  • - optionally spike shoes if you need to walk on a fresh layer.

Quartz broadcast system

If you need a more anti-slip and more durable surface, it is worth considering a quartz broadcast system. In this system, quartz aggregate is broadcast onto a fresh resin layer, and then the surface is sealed with another resin or lacquer layer.

This solution is especially useful where the floor may be wet, dirty or used more intensively.

A quartz broadcast system may require:

  • - primer resin,
  • - base resin,
  • - quartz aggregate,
  • - sealing layer,
  • - resin rollers,
  • - optionally spike shoes.

Self-levelling resin floor in a garage

A self-levelling floor creates a more uniform and thicker layer than a roller-applied system. However, it requires more precise substrate preparation and more careful application.

For self-levelling systems, tools such as a trowel, spike shoes and a spike roller are used. For self-levelling epoxy floors, a spike roller is treated as a required tool. For polyurethane systems, it may be optional depending on the substrate and preparation method.

 

Substrate preparation

Regardless of the selected system, the substrate should be clean, dry, stable and properly prepared. Concrete should not be greasy, dusty or loose. Damaged, cracked or weak areas should be repaired before starting work.

Priming is an important stage because it improves adhesion of the next layers and reduces substrate absorbency.
